In a nutshell, magical adventure abounds within the Nutcracker story. Young Clara's mischievous Uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer, concocts a fantasy world for Clara, replete with a growing Christmas tree, a Nutcracker doll that comes to life and battles a Mouse King. With the defeat of the Mouse King brings a fantastical sleigh ride through falling snow and dancing snowflakes. Clara's visit to the Land of Sweets is a showcase of dancing treats presented by the Sugar Plum Fairy herself.

Experience Romantic Ballets for
your Valentine’s Weekend
Be drawn in and captivated with romantic ballets at the AB Hall with the timeless music of Frank Sinatra and Claude Bolling. Danced by Saint Louis Ballet artists and with choreography by today's world’s most renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp (Movin’ Out and most recently Come Fly With Me on Broadway) and our own Artistic Director Gen Horiuchi, this series will have you swooning in your seat.
Your Valentine’s at the Ballet will featureTwyla Tharp’s Sinatra Suite which was originally created for Mikhail Baryshnikov at American Ballet Theater in 1984 and will make it’s debut with Saint Louis Ballet. Sinatra Suite features the classic songs of Frank Sinatra including Strangers in the Night, All the Way, That's Life, My Way, and One For My Baby (And One More for the Road); audiences will immediately connect with these classic music favorites as this ballet combines smooth moves with smooth sounds.
The program also includes Horiuchi’s Romantique with music by French Jazz Composer Claude Bolling and will highlight the company’s artistry and technique. Horiuchi has created three ballets on music by Bolling. “When I first listened to his music (Claude Bolling’s Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano Trio) in 2000, I immediately called Mr. Bolling in Paris and asked him for his permission to create a ballet to it.” He jokes, “He had no clue who I was at the time, but I explained what my vision was for the ballet and which sections from his album I would like to use, and at the end of our conversation he was delighted at the idea and gave me permission to move forward using his music. I also told him how much I loved his melody and rhythm which are an absolute perfect fit for the contemporary movements of ballet.”
