The Tony Award-winning best choreographer for the incredible MJ The Musical, now pairs his rarely performed ballet with the sounds of a live chamber orchestra. Inspired by the gold and shimmering hues of Gustav Klimt’s
paintings, Christopher Wheeldon created Within the Golden Hour for 14 dancers, and set it to music by Vivaldi (score by Bosso).
Saint Louis Ballet collaborates with Chamber Music Society of Saint Louis, whose performances demonstrate “instrumental brilliance” (Saint Louis Post-Dispatch, 2019), and the majority of whose musicians are members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Concluding the program is the dazzling Romantique by artistic director Gen Horiuchi. Chamber Music Society’s jazz trio and classical cellist complement the energy and style of the dancers.

WITHIN THE GOLDEN HOUR

Christopher Wheeldon's Within the Golden Hour is based around seven couples separating and intermingling, to music by Vivaldi and Ezio Bosso and lit with the rich colours suggested by sunset.
Within the Golden Hour was created as part of San Francisco Ballet's New Work Festival, which commissioned 10 choreographers to create works for the company. It is performed by 14 dancers, including three main couples, originated by Sarah Van Patten, Pierre-François Vilanoba, Maria Kochetkova, Joan Boada, Katita Waldo and Damian Smith.
In 2016, The Royal Ballet in London performed Within the Golden Hour for the first time. A 2019 revival, also danced by The Royal Ballet, was filmed and released on a DVD,
In June 2020, in the first series of performance since the Royal Opera House's closure due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic, which was broadcast online, dancers Mayara Magri and Matthew Ball performed a pas de deux from Within the Golden Hour, after learning it in five days. The performance was dedicated to Bosso, who died in May that year. In October that year, in Royal Ballet's first full company performance since the pandemic, the finale of Within the Golden Hour was performed.

Concluding the program is the dazzling Romantique alongside the chamber orchestra's cello and jazz trio: Davin Rubicz (cello), Carolyn White (bass), Brian Woods (piano) and Tom Stubbs (drums), performing Claude Bolling's Suite for Cello and Jazz Trio. Saint Louis Ballet dancers love the jazzy and balletic, created by Artistic Director Gen Horiuchi.
