Saint Louis Ballet will perform Don Quixote for the first time in May, 2015. Based on the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, the ballet is known for its demanding choreography and technical wizardry. Don Quixote is a marriage of traditional ballet and Spanish dance -- full of “heat”, firelight and thrills. This classic follows Spain’s legendary hero and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, to Barcelona on a quest for his dream lover, Dulcinea. Don Quixote was first presented by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow in 1869. Since then, it has been staged by companies all over the world in many different versions, all populated by matadors, mischievous lovers, valiant knights and spirits.
“We are very excited to present Don Quixote,” Horiuchi said. “Not only is it our first time dancing this classic, but it’s the first time a St. Louis company has mounted an original production of the ballet. It is one of the most extravagant productions and St. Louis audiences will love the energy and passion.”
